What we’re Reading

Our homeschool is fairly book intensive.  We don’t read nearly as much as we should but we’re still adjusting to life with a baby.  I’m very happy with what we’re getting done right now.  This is a list of books that we’ve read in our homeschool and stuff that I’ve read on my own…if that ever happens again.  I also have a page of What we’re Watching.

My Father’s Dragon
Elmer and the Dragon
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Little House in the Big Woods
Holy Twins: Benedict & Scholastica by Norris
The Hero Beowulf by Kimmel
Favorite Medieval Tales by Osborne
Frog and Toad are Friends
The Mouse and the Motorcycle
A Wrinkle in Time
The Secrets of the Droon 1-3
Billy and Blaze
Magic Tree House Stagefright on a Summer’s Night

The boys thought this one was a bit slow at times. I think they would rather have had the information presented without the perspective of Buzz Aldrin’s daughter. I thoroughly enjoyed it though.

*We read lots of books between these but I never got around to posting any of them.*

The Persian Cinderella

We’ve been enjoying reading the different versions of fairy tales around the world.

Barack Obama:  United States President

I had Michael read this one on election day.  It has a couple of inaccuracies in it but is still a good overview of Barack Obama.

Hour at the Olympics

This is what Michael’s working on for independent reading.  I really enjoys the Magic Tree House books.  On the way out of the library with this one he asked me “Mary Pope Osborne…does she write ALL the Magic Tree House books?”  Why yes she does.  I’m surprised he noticed!  So went I went to assign Michael reading from this book I was surprised to find out that he was already almost finished with it!  That’s a good book!

The Ancient Greek Olympics

OK, we didn’t actually read all of this one but we did look at the pictures and talk about some of the text.

The King and the Three Thieves

This was a fun read.  I can’t say it contributed much to what we’re learning though.

Black Ships Before Troy

This is the story of the Illiad rewritten for older kids.  We just started this but so far I LOVE it.  It has beautiful writing and wonderful illustrations.  It’s definitely captured the boys attention as well.

This is what we read for science this week. None of our other books came in from the library. The kids love magic school bus books so I read them whenever it’s appropriate for our topic. I also love that since I only read the main text on the page they are often pouring over the book after we’re done.

You wouldn’t want to be a Slave in Ancient Greece

The kids really enjoy this series of books as well.  I hadn’t planned this one for school since I knew they would read it on their own but once again most of our stuff didn’t come in from the library.

Trojan Horse

Michael read this one out loud for us.  It was a great intro to the story of the Illiad.  We did this one before we started Black Ships Before Troy so that the kids would have a basic understanding of what was going on.  It seems to have worked!
